ONLY FOOLS AND HORSES

'Only Fools And Horses' was voted Britain's greatest-ever sitcom (by some way) in a BBC poll, and who's to argue!

David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst had proved their comedy credentials in popular shows; Jason in 'Porridge', 'Open All Hours' - to name just two; Lyndhurst in 'Butterflies' and 'Going Straight'. The pairing was an inspired piece of casting. As was that of two not such big names - Lennard Pearce as Grandad, and Buster Merryfield as Uncle Albert.

TV shows often work on a simple level, i.e. characters we can identify with, and in Jason's Del Boy we all know someone similar. He's a ducker and diver, but basically a decent chap who just wants to get on, but is continually frustrated. He keeps trying though, and everyone loves a trier.

Younger brother Rodney (Lyndhurst) has the intelligence Del craves, but there's a strong family bond, despite the embarrassing situations he often puts Rodney in. The closeness the brothers also feel, for their grandfather and uncle, isn't masked by jokes at their expense either.

The characters are all memorable, and the great John Sullivan proved himself to be just about the most gifted British sitcom writer of his generation.
