SHARPE

'Sharpe' is a brilliantly made ITV series of, basically, TV movies, inspired by the novels of Bernard Cornwell.

The main character of Richard Sharpe is brought vividly to life by the brooding Sean Bean, who actually was originally offered the part, but was unavailable. Second choice Paul McGann injured his knee playing football - after two days of filming the first episode. By the time they began shooting again, Bean was available.

The series was first screened in 1993, and, after a long break, 'Sharpe' returned to ITV screens in April, 2006, with Sean Bean still in the lead role, and Sharpe's close comrade, Patrick Harper, played again by Daragh O'Malley, also returning. Both retain the charisma and gusto of their earlier performances, though 'Sharpe' itself is more gory than the episodes from the 1990s.

The series was filmed in Turkey, the Crimea, England, Spain, and Portugal.
