THE MATRIX
(1999)

'The Matrix' Trilogy were a group of movies like no other, and I can safely say I've never seen anything quite like them. It is indeed a world "where anything is possible".

Keanu Reeves is Neo Anderson, selected as 'The One' - a man to challenge the status quo of a world where everyone is part of a machine. Just a cog and nothing more in a world of reality or unreality.

The movie is fast-paced to the nth degree, with manic, martial arts fight scenes, morphing, slo-mo/360 camera angles, speeded up effects. 'The Matrix' movies have long been acknowledged as raising the bar regarding special effects, though after the first movie, when 'Matrix Reloaded' reaches new heights of special effects excellence, you get the feeling that the effects guys are like kids in an unguarded sweetshop. It's a tad overdone, with bewildering fight sequences. That said, when a gang of Smiths becomes an army of Smiths taking on Neo, in 'Matrix Reloaded', you know you're watching one of the most spectacular fight sequences in movie history. It's also an achievement to see that the effects are cranked up an extra notch from the first film.

Reeves plays the taciturn hero with understated aplomb, and Laurence Fishburne is outstanding as the father of the revolution, Morpheus. Hugo Weaving clearly revels in playing Smith - a nemesis of the human race, though his reasons for being so are unnervingly understandable, as he states in 'The Matrix': "You move to an area, and you multiply, and multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet, you are a plague, and we are the cure." Weaving plays Smith with that deadpan humour, and general detachment, which turns a good villain into an outstanding one. Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity is alluring, and plays her in the vogue of female action heroes (think of a cross between Emma Peel, Lara Croft, and Batgirl). Definitely feminine, but definitely not to be messed with or patronised. As a biker chick in 'Matrix Reloaded' she's like two Emma Peels. Neo falls in love with her, of course...

The third film, 'The Matrix Revolutions', sees Neo go blind, a charismatic Oriental guy, and all things come to a climax - or do they?

'Matrix 2' saw an army of Smiths, and 'Matrix 3' sees Neo go blind, and personal tragedy.

'Halliwell's Film Guide' summary of 'The Matrix': "An insignificant worker turns out to be the promised leader who fights aginst the Matrix, an artificial intelligence that controls the world and consumes its inhabitants."
