THE DEFIANT ONES
Sidney Poitier (Noah Cullen) and Tony Curtis (John 'Joker' Jackson) star in this ultimately uplifting film about two escaped convicts, on the run from the harsh justice of the chain gang.
They escape, but are still chained together - which is a problem, as they hate each other. The feelings change over the course of time, and Jackson passes up the opportunity to betray Cullen to save his own skin.
It may seem a little dated now, but this film was made when, in some parts of the U.S., the black man was treated disgracefully, so the movie itself should be admired for taking on and exposing racist attitudes.
This film won Oscars for writers Nathan E. Douglas (who also wrote the original story) and Harold Jacob Smith (Screenplay), and for Sam Leavitt's stark b/w photography. It was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director - Stanley Kramer; Best Actor - Curtis and Poitier; Best Supporting Actor - Theodore Bikel (Sheriff Max Muller); Best Supporting Actress - Cara Williams (The Woman - that's how she was billed!).
